Glass

Chips, cracks, and when the glass has to come out

A chip is a point where something hit the glass. It looks small, but it is a weak spot, and the windshield flexes every time you hit a pothole, slam a door or run the defroster on a cold Providence morning. That flexing is what walks a chip into a crack. A crack that has started to run, one that reaches the edge, or one sitting in the driver's line of sight is the kind of damage where the safe answer is new glass.

People wait because the car still drives. That is the trap. Glass that is damaged does not get better on its own, and the longer it sits the more likely a small flaw turns into a full-width crack on the highway. If you are unsure, call (401) 461-9200 or stop by 299 Allens Ave and let Ray look at it. A look costs you a few minutes, and estimates come back within 24 hours on average.

More than a window: the glass is part of the car

It helps to stop thinking of a windshield as a pane of glass sitting in a frame. It is bonded to the body, and in a crash it helps the roof hold its shape and gives the passenger airbag something solid to push against. That is why replacing one is trade work and not a swap. The bond has to be clean, the opening has to be prepared right and the new glass has to seat evenly all the way around.

Ray's Travelers Auto Body does this work with highly skilled technicians and the best materials, the same standard the shop holds on every body repair. Being a full collision shop helps here. When a hit to the car also broke the glass, the windshield is handled by the same people who are repairing the panels, instead of being farmed out to a second business with a second appointment.

After the new glass goes in

New glass is not finished the instant it is in place. The adhesive holding it needs time to cure, and the car should be treated gently while it does. Ask the technician how long to wait before you drive off and what to avoid in the meantime, such as slamming doors or pressure washing the area. That short wait is part of the job, not a delay.

If the glass was broken in an accident or by road debris, the claim does not have to be a second project for you. Ray and Jenn work with insurance companies and handle the paperwork, and the glass claim runs alongside the rest of the repair. If the car needs more than glass, there are onsite rentals and loaner cars while it is in the shop. Hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 to 4:30 and Saturday 8 to noon.
